Heart meds may cut risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia
January 13, 2010 (WLS) — Some high-blood pressure and heart disease medications may cut the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Researchers from Boston found that older people taking a certain type of blood pressure medication known as antigen receptor blockers, or ARBs, were significantly less likely to develop the brain wasting illness.
Dementia affects some 35 million people around the world. Despite decades of research, doctors still have few effective weapons, and experts commenting on the latest study in the British Medical Journal say it could have major implications.
