Anesthesia Found to Trigger Alzheimer’s: Research
A study carried out by a team of Spanish researchers has found that one of the most widely administered anesthetics by inhalation, increases risks of triggering Alzheimer’s Disease in persons with genetic factors related to the disease.
Headed by Dr. Maria Angeles Mena and Dr. Justo Garcia de Yebenes, from CIBERNED, the team, found in its research that anesthesia turned out to be safe for normal mice, but was “potentially” harmful for mice with mutations of the amyloid precursor protein (APP). This finding suggests that APP may be a possible mechanism of triggering Alzheimer’s.
Experts suggest that there have been previous studies pointing towards an increased occurrence of Alzheimer’s in patients who are administered with anesthesia during extensive surgery.
The scientists are of the opinion that the repetitive anesthesia can result in development of persistent disorders in people vulnerable to Alzheimer’s, which affects their behavior during later stages.
The details of the research can be found in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.
